Recently, the Literacy
Leadership Team had the opportunity to attend a two-day
inservice on
Improving High School Literacy. The workshop
featured presenters from the National Literacy Project.
The District SSR staff provided the workshop for schools
that are involved with the secondary school reform.
I was very impressed
with the content and quality of the presenters and their
presentations. If our students are going to be
successful in school, then we must provide a
literacy-rich school environment. The presenters
stressed that a school with print rich classrooms, a
school-wide vocabulary program, high expectations of
literacy for students, a literacy community service
program, support of the stakeholders, a literacy plan,
team teaching, literacy connection outside the school,
professional development, choices for students and
teachers about reading and student support will flourish
with success.
We must learn to
become proficient at the dynamics of literacy learning
by connecting the text and content with the learner.
Mr. Phillips will be establishing a literacy
professional development section in our library where
teachers can review current research and projects. I
encourage all teachers to visit the
National Literacy Project
website.
