THE SCIENTIFIC HOLIDAYS PARTY
Pierre and Marie Curie were radiating enthusiasm;
Einstein thought it would be relatively easy to attend;
Volta was electrified;
Archimedes was buoyant;
Ampere was worried he wasn't up with current fashion;
Ohm resisted the idea at first;
Boyle said he was under too much pressure;
Edison said it would be an illuminating experience;
Watt reckoned it would be a good way to let off steam;
Stephenson thought the whole idea was loco;
Wilbur Wright accepted, provided he and Orville could get a flight;
Dr Jekyll declined - he hadn't been feeling himself lately;
Morse's reply - I'll be there on the dot, Can't stop now, must dash;
Heisenberg was uncertain if he could make it;
Hertz said in the future he planned to attend with more frequency;
Hawking said he'd try to string enough time together to make a space;
Darwin said he'd have to see what evolved;
Mendel said he'd put some things together and see what came out;
Newton was moved to attend; and
Gauss was asked to attend because of his magnetic personality...

A Brief Space to Relax... |
No. 3, December 15, 2006 |
| |
|
Season’s Spirit
For almost everybody, the end
of December is a time of joy and celebration. It is the symbolic death of the
old year and the way to welcome a new one, filled with the infinite
possibilities of life and love. It coincides with many religious events, such as
Christmas and Hanukkah, and this coincidence, while contributing to the general
spirit of celebration, is also the source of bitter conflicts between people of
different religions. These conflicts emerge, above all, from the attitudes of
intransigence that many people assume; these attitudes originate from the still
unhealed, open wounds of oppression and discrimination.
Think just how much better the
season would be if everybody was able to celebrate in a common spirit of joy and
love!
It is not difficult, but it
requires an open mind and an open heart. It requires throwing away the
conflicts, the fears, the bad memories, the prejudices, and opening the mind and
the heart to understand and love one another, no matter which his/her religion,
attitudes, and open wounds are.
It requires us to stop reacting
to the ‘bad’ attitudes with even worse attitudes. It requires the ability to
surmount our own insecurities as well as to understand the fears and
insecurities of other people.
Surely, it requires LOVE. Love
and compassion are in the core of all religions; therefore, it is hard to
understand the reasons why supposed ‘religious’ people are able to kill in the
name of their Gods. We all have suffered the result of these violent attitudes,
but we don’t realize very easily how deep these same attitudes are rooted in our
own hearts.
Let’s uproot them to be able to
feel true happiness and joy. Let’s celebrate this season in its true spirit.
Let’s try to love, understand, and give joy to our family, our friends, our
co-workers, our students, and our neighbors, without expecting them to take the
initiative. Let’s stop reacting to bad attitudes with worse attitudes, because
this is the only way to break the vicious circle of violence and hate.
Happy Holidays!

NEW YEARS
To leave the old
with a burst of song;
To recall the right
and forgive the wrong;
To forget the
things that bind you fast
To the vain regrets
of the year that's past;
To have the
strength to let you go your hold
Of the not worth
while of the days grown old;
To dare go forth
with a purpose true,
To the unknown task
of the year that's new;
To help your
brother along the road,
To do his work and
lift his load;
To add your gift to
the world's good cheer,
Is to have and to
give a Happy New Year.

A Good Joke on Teaching...
|
Early one morning,
a mother went in to wake up her son. "Wake up, son. It's time to go to school!"
"But why, Mother? I don't want to go."
"Give me two reasons why you don't want to go."
"Well, the kids hate me for one, and the teachers hate me, too!"
"Oh, that's no reason not to go to school. Come on now and get ready."
"Give me two reasons why I should go to school."
"Well, for one, you're 42 years old. And for another, you're the Headteacher!"

"Knowledge is happiness, because to have
knowledge—broad, deep knowledge—is to know true ends from false, and lofty
things from low. To know the thoughts and deeds that have marked man’s progress
is to feel the great heart-throbs of humanity through the centuries; and if one
does not feel in these pulsations a heavenward striving, one must indeed be deaf
to the harmonies of life."
-Hellen Keller

"Love
is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love.
Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by
it alone. Love is God, and to die means that I, a particle of love, shall return
to the general and eternal source."

Tolstoi

CHEROKEE WISDOM
From Mr. Alterman

TWO WOLVES
A great story to pass on to our kids and a lesson to be
learned by us all.
One evening, an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle
that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two 'wolves'
inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed,
arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride,
superiority and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,
humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and
faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather: "Which one wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
