About Us |
|
Designed specifically to meet the unique needs of students who have experienced difficulties in the traditional school setting, Miami-Douglas MacArthur Senior High South was established in 1973 as an alternative school. The students we serve struggle with issues that range from disruptive behavior and truancy to more serious legal and substance abuse problems.
The 2007-2008 school year marked the beginning of a new era for MacArthur South as we adopted a new, research-based, single-gender format and expanded our grade level offerings so that we could service young men in grades six through twelve. With the new focus came a new name and Miami Douglas MacArthur Senior High South became The Young Men’s Academy for Academic and Civic Development at MacArthur South.

Our Beliefs |
|
At the Young Men’s Academy, we believe that:
· All aspects of the school’s organization should be learner-centered and designed to accommodate individual learning styles so that all students are given an equal opportunity to experience success.
· Parental support and community involvement is necessary to motivate students for optimal success in education.
· It is necessary to offer an integrated curriculum, using a team approach, which nurtures and encourages life-long learning.
· It is essential for each faculty and staff member to demonstrate genuine concern for every student and foster a desire within each student to learn.
· Students are unique in their needs and are motivated in different ways.
· Students must be provided with a physically, socially, and emotionally safe learning environment that encourages them to develop leadership skills and use sound judgment.
· By creating an environment that accepts and respects the diversity of all individuals, we will increase student understanding and tolerance of different peoples and cultures.
· Fair and consistent rules and disciplinary structures, positive values, and social skills are necessary for all individuals.
· It is necessary to maintain regular communication and opportunities for professional development in the areas of technology, classroom management, instructional strategies, learning styles, and inclusion.
· Providing a stimulating environment that develops and encourages creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking will enable students to acquire the necessary skills to function and compete in a global, ever-changing society.
